Brendan and I took Scout to the dog park this morning. There were a decent number of dogs with their owners, and one owner in particular, brought both her dog and her 6 year old daughter. Her 6 year old terror demon child daughter.
This little girl had one of those tennis ball throwing devices that are sort of like a stick attached to a ball, which I assume allows one to throw the ball a greater distance than normally possible.
Terror child would throw the ball, proceed to chase the dog that intercepted the ball, waving the throwing stick like a jedi sword, while screaming, “Give me my ball, or I will KILLLLLL you!!” Charming.
Needless to say, it became very apparent that the dogs were terrified of her and in no way wanted to bring the ball back to her. And it also became very apparent that the mother actually brought her daughter to the dog park to release some energy, as opposed to the dog.
Scout was having fun nonetheless, until all the dogs started chasing her and mowing her down, so I brought her over to another enclosure area to run and play around by herself for awhile. Terror demon child followed me and we sat on the bench together. I gently suggested that maybe we could not use the throwing stick as a weapon, and that maybe we could replace the word “kill” with “get”. Out of earshot of her actual mother, of course.
TDC: “Why are you with him?” (him meaning Brendan)
Me: “Well, he’s my husband.”
TDC: “Then why don’t you guys have kids.”
Me: “Well, we’re pretty young. But we probably will someday.” (cop-out answer, I was taken off-guard)
I could tell she was contemplating my response. She didn’t really buy it, but she let it go.
TDC: “Oh.”
We spent the rest of the time practicing how to be nice to the dog. When it was time for terror child to leave, she was near tantrum state as she had adopted Scout and I as her family of the day. Brendan was still a random “him”.
I could see Brendan laughing at me from a few yards away. I have a very strong feeling that terror demon child is going to inform her parents this evening that they are in fact old because they have kids. And I was also reminded with how I am completely and totally cool with the fact that we don’t have any terrors little angels of our own yet.
