I haven’t posted about it much, mainly due to pure laziness, but Bren and I have been house hunting for about a month now.
I like to consider myself relatively non-judgmental and easy going, but, you guys, the state of cleanliness and disarray in some of these houses is obscene. I’ve been shocked. Admittedly, I’m a natural clutter-er and not the greatest at maintaining a neat house. And I’m cool with that. I am, however, sanitary.
Some of these houses are absolutely disgusting. And they’re amazing homes in wonderful neighborhoods. I’d never have guessed from the outside.
Wouldn’t you think to up the display level of your home at least a touch if you’re aiming to convince a perfect stranger to purchase it?
We went into one home that was so soaked with cat pee and smelled so terribly of animal odors that I couldn’t even go into the bedrooms. I have two cats and a dog…I would’ve been absolutely mortified. And these people have kids…is that safe?
I’ve seen carpet that looks like someone pulled every condiment out of their fridge and ground them into the fibers.
Woodwork and walls that looks like a 2 year old got ahold of a hatchet and went ape-shit.
I realize all of these things are cosmetic, and thus fixable, but that’s not the point. What the ef are people doing to their property?! I will now forever wonder about what destruction and chaos is happening behind perfectly manicured lawns.

I remember when my parents house was for sale, and I was the only one living it in. I was reminded to clean the 1 dirty dish in the sink, and keep everything neat and tidy for anyone that might see it. I am extra tidy if I know others will see.

Ew. This definitely happened when we were looking at flats here, but they were student rentals so you sort of expect it. Still. DISGUSTING.

Febreeze stopped marketing to people whose homes smell because they realized smelly people don’t realize it. Think of that and the cat pee house. Yikes.

PREACH, girl. It is sad and disheartening more for them than us as potential buyers. We can’t know their stories or their reasoning but it truly is baffling. I now notice more than I ever did before in regards to my own cleanliness, etc.
